101 Dead in Nepal Due to Heavy Rains-Floods
The capital city of Nepal, Kathmandu, has seen flooding in its low-lying sections as a result of persistent precipitation accumulation. This natural calamity claimed the lives of at least 101 persons.
Experts note that Nepal, like other South Asian nations, sees high levels of rainfall during the June to September monsoon season, and that the frequency and severity of these natural catastrophes are expected to rise due to climate change.
Since Friday, a number of locations in eastern and central Nepal have been submerged. There have been flash floods in multiple rivers, and there has been significant damage to the nation’s highways.
In a day, the Kathmandu Valley received 240 mm of rain up till Saturday AM. This is the most rainfall the capital has seen since 1970. In addition to the 3000 security guards on duty, motorboats and helicopters are being used to aid in rescue efforts.
Rescue personnel are transporting victims to safety on rubber rafts. Due to bad weather, over 150 flights were canceled on Friday night.
