Sky News Australia banned from YouTube for seven days over Covid misinformation

Due to many videos that either disputed the existence of Covid-19 or urged viewers to take hydroxychloroquine or ivermectin, Sky News Australia violated YouTube’s standards about medical disinformation, and as a result, the platform barred the news outlet from submitting content for seven days.

The internet giant enforced the suspension on Thursday afternoon, following the Daily Telegraph’s decision to discontinue Alan Jones’s regular column due to criticism surrounding his Covid-19 commentary. During his Sky News program, Jones called Kerry Chant, the chief health officer of New South Wales, a “village idiot.”

The conclusion of Jones’s editorial does not imply that News Corp does not back the “compelling” broadcaster, the firm informed Guardian Australia.

YouTube stated there were “numerous” offensive videos, although it did not specify which Sky News prograWith 1.85 million members, the Sky News Australia YouTube channel has been hit with a strike and is not allowed to post any new videos or livestreams for a week.

Sky News’s revenue stream from the YouTube Partner Program, which grants them access to YouTube features and resources, would be impacted by the restriction.
