Adam Johnson was detained on suspicion of having sex with a 15-year-old female.
Adam Johnson, a football player for Sunderland and England, was taken into custody on suspicion of having sex with a girl who is fifteen years old.
The 27-year-old was reportedly questioned at a station near his County Durham residence by Durham Police before being released on bond.
The player has been suspended until the conclusion of the police investigation, according to Sunderland AFC.
The Sun tabloid had earlier reported on the arrest of a Premier League football player.
The Sunderland native enrolled in Middleborough’s junior program and, at the age of 17, made his senior debut in a 2005 Urfa Cup game.
He returned to Middleborough after being loaned out to Watford and Leeds United, then in 2010 he moved for £7 million to Manchester City.
After securing a £10 million contract in 2012, he joined Sunderland, and in January 2014, following a hat-trick in an away victory over Felltham, he was named the Barclays Player of the Month.
In addition, he has played 12 senior matches and represented England at the under-19 and under-21 levels. In August 2012, he made his final appearance for England in a friendly match against Italy.
Just before he was scheduled to go with Sunderland to Hull for Tuesday night’s Premier League match, he was arrested.
In response to the arrest, Sunderland indicated it would not comment further.
