The net migration to the UK in 2022 has been revised upward to a historic 745 000.

The Office for National Statistics has amended its 2022 net migration figures and released new data that shows 672,000 individuals entered the UK in the year ending in June 2023, setting a new record.

The ONS reported in May that the number for the previous year was 606,000, which at the time was considered a record high.

However, after reexamining the data, the organization claims that the real number was about 140,000 greater than initially believed, making it an even more exceptional statistic.

Even while the most recent figures revealed on Wednesday were less than the unexpected yearly total for the previous year, net migration has increased when compared to the 12-month figure up to June 2022, which was 607,000.

Even while the statistic today showed a decrease from that historic high, the ONS stated that it was “too early to say if this is the start of a new downward trend,” even if it did show a slowdown in immigration and an increase in emigration.

When immigration (people entering the UK) and emigration (people leaving the UK) are combined, the number of individuals arriving in the UK is known as net migration.

The predicted net migration to the UK between July 2019, a few months before the most recent general election, and June 2023 was 1,611,000.

The sum represents net inflows of 1,829,000 non-EU immigrants and net outflows of 81,000 EU nationals and 137,000 British nationals.

Tory backbenchers have already started to criticize the figures, labeling them as “a slap in the face to the British public who have voted to control and reduce migration at every opportunity” by former home secretary Suella Braverman

She urged the government, of which she was a member until last week, to “act now” by enacting measures such as raising the salary threshold for entry into the nation, closing the graduate visa route, limiting the number of dependents, and introducing an annual cap on net migration and the number of health and social care visas awarded.
