Typhoon Shanshan Hits Japan’s Coast, Claims 3 Lives
Typhoon Shanshan has hit the southern island of Kyushu in Japan. Three people have died so far. Besides, at least 39 people were injured.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), Shanshan hit the coast of Kagoshima on the southern island of Kyushu at around 8 a.m. local time on (August 29, 2024) Thursday at a speed of 198 kilometers per hour.
Local authorities warned it could be the strongest cyclone to hit the region and ordered the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of residents.
Meanwhile, Kyushu and surrounding areas received heavy rains for about 24 hours before the typhoon hit. According to Japan Meteorological Agency records, Kyushu and its surrounding areas received 600 millimeters of rain.
About 255,000 houses on the island are currently without electricity due to the storm. Also, the authorities have already canceled all flights to the southern region due to adverse weather conditions. Besides, the movement of several high-speed trains has also been suspended. Kagoshima and the neighboring city of Miyazaki suffered the most damage from the typhoon.
