Outbreak of Waterborne Diseases among Flood Victims in Feni
Floodwaters, exacerbated by heavy monsoon rains and poor drainage infrastructure, have inundated large swathes of the region, creating ideal conditions for the spread of diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and hepatitis A. The floods have not only displaced thousands but have also contaminated water sources, further fueling the crisis.
The government has mobilized emergency response teams to address the situation. Efforts are underway to distribute clean water, set up temporary medical camps, and provide necessary supplies to the affected communities. Public health officials are also conducting awareness campaigns to educate residents on hygiene practices and the importance of avoiding contaminated water sources.
The civil surgeon said, ‘I have treated 1 thousand 807 patients at the health complex and Sadar Hospital of 5 areas in the last 24 hours till 6 pm on Wednesday. Most of them are suffering from water borne diseases.’ He also said that due to adverse flood conditions, they have not yet been able to prepare a list of the affected by disease.
According to the Civil Surgeon’s Office, six hospitals and 41 community clinics are treating the flood victims, while residents of water-logged Gopal and Radhanagar Unions are not getting any medical care.
