Flood Damage in Bangladesh Reaches Tk 14421 Crore

Fahmida Khatun is an executive director of the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD), said that the recent severe floods in the southeastern region, including Comilla, Feni, Noakhali and Lakshmipur, have caused a loss of Tk 14,421 crore.

She gave this information at a press conference organized at the CPD office in Dhanmondi on Sunday (October 6) about the damage and rehabilitation process in the southeastern region including Comilla, Feni, Noakhali and Laxmipur.

Fahmida Khatun said that the recent severe floods in the southeastern region caused a loss of 14 thousand 421 crore rupees, which is 26 percent of the GDP. Agriculture and forest sectors have suffered the most. The amount of which is 5 thousand 169 crores.

Stating that there has been a loss of Tk 4,653 crore in the infrastructure sector, she said that there has been a loss of Tk 2,407 crore in houses.

Fahmida Khatun also said that Noakhali has suffered the most damage as a district. she said, the amount of damage is 4 thousand 191 crores. Then there is Comilla district. The amount of damage is 3 thousand 390 crores.

CPD found inconsistency in distribution of relief. Fahmida Khatun said that 1.643 thousand people have been affected in Noakhali. The amount of loss is 4 thousand 192 crores. 14 crores and 90 lakhs have been allocated. According to that, each person received an average of 93 rupees.

While 9,500 people have been affected by the flood in Sylhet, she said, the amount of damage in Sylhet is Tk 20 crore 50 lakh. 14 crore 60 lakh taka has been allocated for relief there. Each person received an average relief of 15 thousand 320 taka and in Comilla 136 taka per person and in Lakshmipur per person got an average of 62 taka relief.

On the other hand, heavy rain from the night of Friday (October 4) and hill slopes coming down from the upstream caused a terrible flood situation in Sherpur. In this, lakhs of people of 60 unions of Srivardi, Jhenaigati and Nalitabari upazilas of the district have become watertight.
