Dhaka Ranks Third in Global Air Pollution
In a recent global air quality index, Dhaka has been ranked as the third most polluted city worldwide. The city’s air quality has been deemed “unhealthy” due to high levels of particulate matter, a major contributor to respiratory problems and other health risks.
Meanwhile, India’s Delhi tops the world’s most polluted city list with a score of 276 today. Democratic Republic of Congo’s Kinshasa is second with a score of 204 and Pakistan’s Lahore is fourth with a score of 180.
The alarming ranking has raised concerns among health experts and environmentalists, who warn of the serious health implications for Dhaka’s residents. Exposure to polluted air has been linked to a variety of health problems, including heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
AQI in Bangladesh is determined based on 5 characteristics of pollution. They are Particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2 and Ozone (O3). Dhaka has been suffering from air pollution for a long time. Its air quality generally becomes unhealthy during winters and improves slightly during monsoons.
The ranking serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for sustainable urban development and effective pollution control measures to protect the health and well-being of Dhaka’s population.
