Pope Francis Passes Away: A Cloud of Mourning Over the Catholic World
Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of over a billion Catholics worldwide, has passed away. The Vatican confirmed his death on Monday (April 21) at 7:35 AM local time through an official video message. The news was first reported by British news agency Reuters.
The head of the Roman Catholic Church had been battling multiple health complications for a prolonged period. He was 88 at the time of his death. Notably, the Pope passed away the day after Christians around the world celebrated Easter. Just a day before his death, on Sunday, he had met with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance.
Pope Francis’ health had been in steady decline in recent months. In late February, his condition suddenly deteriorated. Due to a severe coughing fit, he aspirated vomit into his airways, which required the use of a non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIV) mask.
On February 14, he was admitted to Gemelli University Hospital in Rome with severe bronchitis symptoms. Doctors identified bacterial, viral, and fungal infections in his respiratory tract, which later developed into pneumonia affecting both lungs. Blood tests also revealed signs of anemia, low platelet count, and early-stage kidney dysfunction. It is worth noting that in his youth, a portion of Pope Francis’ lung was surgically removed, a condition that continued to affect his health throughout his life.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina was elected Pope on March 13, 2013, taking the name Francis. He became the first Latin American and the first Jesuit Pope in history. He quickly gained global recognition for his compassion toward the poor and his preference for a humble lifestyle.
He succeeded Pope Benedict during a time of crisis, when the Catholic Church was mired in scandals, including widespread allegations of child abuse, financial mismanagement, and deep bureaucratic divisions within the Vatican. Pope Francis took on the monumental task of restoring order and integrity within the Church.
Following the Pope’s death, the Vatican has entered a period of mourning, with various religious and ceremonial arrangements underway. Leaders from around the world and religious communities have expressed deep sorrow and extended their condolences. Many are remembering Pope Francis for his spiritual leadership, humanitarian vision, and his tireless efforts to promote interfaith dialogue.
The Vatican has yet to officially announce the funeral schedule, but a large-scale farewell and state funeral are expected to be held in the coming days.
