U.S. Sanctions Six Indian Firms Over Trade Ties with Iran

The United States has imposed sanctions on six Indian companies for allegedly engaging in trade involving Iran’s petroleum and petrochemical products. The action, announced on Thursday (July 31), was reported by prominent Indian media outlets, including The Hindu and NDTV.

In an official statement, the U.S. State Department alleged that these Indian firms were knowingly involved in transactions related to the purchase, sale, and marketing of Iranian energy products, thereby violating U.S. sanctions imposed on Iran.

The companies facing sanctions are:

  • Alchemie Overseas Pvt. Ltd.
  • Jupiter Dye Chem
  • Global Industrial & Chemical Corporation
  • Romniklal S. Gosalia and Company
  • Persistent Petrochem Ltd.
  • Kanchan Polymers Pvt. Ltd.

Under the sanctions, any assets or financial interests of these companies within U.S. jurisdiction, or controlled by U.S. persons, will be frozen. In addition, any subsidiaries or entities in which these firms hold a 50% or greater stake will also fall under the same restrictions.

The U.S. administration stated that the move is part of a broader effort to dismantle Iran’s so-called “shadow fleet” and disrupt intermediaries aiding in the global transport of Iranian oil and petrochemicals. It reflects a renewed push to enforce economic pressure on Tehran.

Alongside the sanctions, the Trump administration has also announced a 25% retaliatory tariff on Indian goods, set to take effect from August 1. Furthermore, former President Donald Trump has issued a warning that India may face additional punitive actions for its ongoing purchases of weapons and energy resources from Russia. However, no specific measures have been detailed yet.

While the full ramifications of these sanctions are yet to be seen, analysts suggest that the growing geopolitical rift may strain diplomatic and economic ties between the U.S. and India. India’s balancing act between global powers—particularly its relationships with Iran and Russia—is increasingly coming under the spotlight in the evolving global trade landscape.
