Al Hilal Banned from Saudi Super Cup, Reigning Champions Ousted from Tournament

Despite qualifying for the 2026–27 Saudi Super Cup, Al Hilal has been officially banned from participating in the tournament. In addition, the club has been fined 500,000 Saudi Riyals (approximately $133,000 USD). However, Al Hilal will have the right to appeal the decision.

The punishment comes after Al Hilal withdrew from the current edition of the tournament. Citing fatigue following their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup, the reigning champions opted out of the Super Cup. Al Hilal reached the quarterfinals in the Club World Cup but were eliminated by Brazilian side Fluminense.

This year’s Saudi Super Cup is scheduled to take place in Hong Kong from August 19 to 23. The four-team tournament features the champions and runners-up of the Saudi League and King’s Cup. With Al Hilal withdrawing, AFC Champions League winners Al Ahli will replace them.

The remaining teams in the tournament are Saudi Pro League and King’s Cup champions Al Ittihad, runners-up Al Nassr, and league third-place team Al Qadsiah.

The competition will kick off on August 19 with a clash between Al Ittihad and Al Nassr. The following day, Al Ahli will face Al Qadsiah.

This ban and financial penalty come as a major blow for Al Hilal. All eyes will be on the club’s next move as they consider an appeal against the decision.
