Alexei Navalny, a jailed opposition politician from Russia, has died
As President Vladimir Putin’s most ardent opponent, Alexei Navalny led campaigns against government corruption and organized large-scale anti-Kremlin demonstrations. He passed away on Friday in the Arctic prison colony, where he was serving a 19-year term, Russia’s jail administration. His age was 47.
Less than a month before an election that might extend Putin’s six-year term in office, the shocking news of Navalny’s passing shocked and infuriated the Kremlin chief, who has clamped down on domestic opposition.
In many Russian cities, people placed flowers at memorials honoring those who lost their lives to political repression during the Soviet era. However, there was little apparent sign that Navalny’s passing, which will be a severe blow to the opposition’s disarray and hardship, would lead to widespread demonstrations.
As per the Federal Penitentiary Service, Navalny felt poorly after going for a walk on Friday and eventually lost consciousness. When the paramedics came, they were unable to revive him. The cause of death was stated as “being established” during the service.
Since his return to Moscow in January 2021, Navalny has been detained. He had been recovering in Germany from nerve agent poisoning, which he attributed to the Kremlin. He has since been given three prison terms, which he has rejected as being driven by politics.
Many who have protested Putin’s rule and Western officials alike praised Navalny for his bravery. The cause of the opposition leader’s death may never be discovered, but many international leaders claimed that Russian authorities had the ultimate responsibility for his demise. The opposition leader’s health had been declining recently.
If verified, “the weakness and decay at the core of the system that Putin has constructed is only highlighted by his death in a Russian prison and the obsession and fear of one man. At a conference in Germany, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated, Russia is to blame for this.
Navalny has probably now paid for this courage with his life, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
