Arrest Warrant Against Shafiq Rehman Revoked
The court revoked the arrest warrant against journalist Shafiq Rehman in the case of kidnapping and attempted murder of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajib Wazed Joy.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate before Monday (September 30). Journalist Shafiq Rehman surrendered through his lawyer in the court of Mahbubul Haque. After the hearing, the judge withdrew the arrest warrant issued against Shafiq Rehman. At the same time the warrant was recalled. He came to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka around 10:30 am.
On Sunday (September 29), Shafiq Rehman’s lawyer Syed Zainul Abedin Mejbah told the media that the sentence of prominent journalist Shafiq Rehman and US expatriate businessman Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan in the case of conspiracy to kidnap and kill Joy has been suspended. He said that last Sunday (September 22), the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification suspending the sentence of journalist Shafiq Rehman and US expatriate businessman Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan for one year. For that he has to surrender in court. The sentence was suspended for one year on the condition of surrendering to the court and filing an appeal.
The lawyer also said that since he will surrender to the court according to the conditions, he will not have to go to jail like Mahmudur Rahman.
Deputy Secretary Mohammad Abu Saeed Molla has signed the notification issued by the prison-2 branch of the Security Services Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs. It is said, Shafiq Rehman and Md. In the light of the application for suspension of sentence of Mizanur Rahman Bhuiya alias MR Bhuiya alias Milton Bhuiya and the opinion of the Law and Judicial Department, under the powers conferred by section 401(1) of the Code of Criminal Prosecutor, (Act No. V of 1898) the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court No-2, Paltan Model Police Station Case No-01 (08)2015, GR Case No-294/15 issued against them is suspended by order for one year on the condition of submission of appeal to the learned Court.’
It is known that Shafiq Rehman was arrested on April 16, 2016 in the case filed by the police at Paltan police station on August 3, 2015. He had to stay in jail for five months. After being released on bail, he went to UK in 2018.
