National Parliament Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury has resigned. Dhaka, September 2, 2024 — In a surprising turn of events, Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, the Speaker of the National Parliament of Bangladesh. It has tendered her resignation today. This move marks the end of her distinguished tenure, which began in April 2013.

According to a Bangabhaban source, Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury submitted her resignation letter to President Mohammad Shahabuddin in the morning of Monday, September 2.

In her resignation statement, Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury expressed gratitude to her colleagues, the members of Parliament, and the citizens of Bangladesh for their support throughout her tenure. “Serving as Speaker has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” she said. “I am deeply appreciative of the opportunity to contribute to the democratic process and to represent the people of Bangladesh.”

As per parliamentary procedure, the Deputy Speaker will temporarily assume the role of Speaker until a new election is held.
