Bangladesh Women crush South Africa Women by 119 runs
At Buffalo Park, East London, on Saturday, the Bangladeshi women achieved a historic victory by 119 runs, their first over South Africa in an ODI since 2017.
Murshida Khatun’s undefeated half-century and the bowlers’ collective effort enabled Bangladesh win the first One-Day International (ODI) in East London on Saturday by a remarkable 119 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Before spinner Nahida Akter took top figures of three for 33 with her fellow bowlers to restrict South Africa to 131 all out after 36.3 overs, M. Khatun played a career-best innings of 91* off 100 deliveries, including 12 fours, to lead Bangladesh to an intimidating total of 250/3.
Bangladesh concluded on a competitive 250/3 in their allotted 50 overs when youthful all-rounder Shorna Akter (28*) joined the in-form M. Khatun in the middle with less than 10 overs remaining. The duo combined to add 60 more runs to the total.
Within the first three overs of the second innings, spinner Sultana Khatun (2/32) and quick bowler Marufa Akter (1/19) dismissed top-order batsmen Laura Wolvaardt (5) and Tazmin Brits (4), making for an unfavorable start to South Africa’s chase.
N. Akter took two wickets to rattle the South Africans, eliminating both batters in quick succession to leave them reeling on 63/4 in the 17th over, despite a small reprieve for South Africa thanks to Anneke Bosch (16) and Suné Luus (31) contributing 41 runs for the third wicket.
Although the hosts’ lower order showed commendable fight and spirit with the bat through contributions from Marx (35), Sinalo Jafta (11) and Masabata Klaas (7), South Africa’s chase came to an end on 131 all-out as Bangladesh wrapped up the victory with 13.3 overs remaining.
