Bangladeshi student Zabeer earns a spot at the prestigious CERN-Solvay Student Camp
Zabeer Zarif Akhter, a talented student of St. Joseph Higher Secondary School, has been selected to participate in the prestigious CERN-Solvay Student Camp, to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from April 19 to April 25, 2026. The camp, organized by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) — the world’s largest particle physics laboratory — offers a one-week residential program where selected students will explore cutting-edge research facilities, participate in guided experiments, and interact with some of the world’s leading scientists in physics and related disciplines.

Zabeer’s selection for this highly competitive global program is a remarkable achievement, as he was chosen from among approximately 2,500 applicants representing 120 countries, with only around 30 students worldwide earning a place in the final group. To qualify, he completed an extensive application process that included an online preparatory course, submission of his academic transcript, a teacher’s recommendation letter, a one-minute video presentation, and responses to eight detailed questions about his motivations and scientific interests.
Reflecting on his journey, Zabeer credited his strong background in international science competitions for enhancing his candidacy. His achievements include being a national champion and global finalist in the Stockholm Junior Water Prize, winning gold and silver medals in the World Innovative Science Project Olympiad 2024, and securing a bronze medal in the Genius Olympiad 2025. These accomplishments, he noted, helped demonstrate his passion for research and innovation.

Zabeer expressed that he views this opportunity as more than just personal recognition; he hopes to use his time at CERN to deepen his understanding of experimental physics and return to Bangladesh with new insights to inspire other young learners to pursue careers in science and research.
Having completed his SSC in 2023 from Bogura Cantonment Public School & College, Zabeer is currently a member of the HSC 2025 batch at St. Joseph Higher Secondary School. His journey from Bogura to the international scientific stage stands as a testament to the growing presence of Bangladeshi youth in the global science and research community.
