Begum Khaleda Zia was acquitted in 5 cases
BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has been acquitted from five cases. Out of these, two cases were filed against celebrating birthdays and insulting freedom fighters. The remaining three were filed for defamation.
CMM court judges Mahbub Alam and Tofazzal Hossain announced this verdict on Tuesday (September 3) morning.
Khaleda Zia’s lawyer Masood Ahmed Talukder filed an application seeking the acquittal of 5 cases of defamation, including celebrating a fake birthday. After the acquittal, Masood Ahmed Talukder himself confirmed the verdict to the media.
Khaleda Zia’s lawyer said that Begum Zia was acquitted because the plaintiff in the case died four years ago.
Besides, the court postponed the hearing of the NAICO corruption case till September 8 due to the absence of witnesses.
Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was sentenced to five years in prison in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8, 2018. In October of that year, the sentence was increased to 10 years after the appeal hearing in the High Court.
After this, the BNP leader was sentenced to another seven years in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case. He was still in the Nazimuddin Road jail in Old Dhaka. Besides, many other cases including defamation were filed against the BNP chief.
