Biden says the US military to airdrop food and supplies to Gaza.
US President Joe Biden revealed preparations on Friday to launch the first military airdrop of food and supplies into Gaza. A day after the deaths of Palestinians queuing for relief highlighted a mounting humanitarian disaster in the packed coastal territory.
Biden gave no further details other than to say that the US airdrop would happen in the next several days. Other countries like as Jordan and France have already conducted airdrops of aid into Gaza.
Biden told reporters we need to do more and the United States will do more adding that aid to Gaza is nowhere near enough.
At the White House, spokeswoman John Kirby stated that airdrops will become a sustained effort. He also stated that the initial airdrop would most likely consist of military MREs or meals ready-to-eat. Kirby said that this isn’t going to end here. Biden told reporters that the US was also considering establishing a marine channel to transport substantial amounts of supplies into Gaza. Officials suggested that airdrops might begin as early as this weekend
Gaza health authorities said Israeli forces murdered over a hundred individuals early on Thursday while they were attempting to approach a rescue convoy close to Gaza City. Nearly five months into the conflict that started on October 7 with a Hamas strike on Israel. The Palestinian people are facing an increasingly dire scenario.
Israel said that people gathered around relief vehicles were mostly to fault for the fatalities, crushed or run over the bodies. An Israeli official stated that forces had fired on crowds they believed to be a threat in a limited response later on.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs the UN sent aid to the besieged northern Gaza on Friday for the first time in more than a week. The UN supplied fuel, vaccines and medications to the Gaza City Al-Shifa Hospital.
Ten days ago, WFP said that it would stop supplying food aid to the northern part of Gaza until the Palestinian enclave’s circumstances permitted a safe distribution.
The UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA said on Friday that in February an average of almost 97 trucks were permitted to enter Gaza per day compared to about 150 trucks per day in January. The number of trucks entering Gaza remains well below the target of 500 per day.
