Bipartisan opposition in the US Senate prompts Joe Biden to withdraw Neera Tanden’s nomination.
Neera Tanden’s nomination as director of President Joe Biden’s budget office was shelved by the White House on Tuesday due to resistance from senators from both parties, marking it as the first victim of the equally divided Senate.
Tanden requested to be removed from consideration for the position, and Biden granted her request in a statement, adding that he would find a different role within his administration for her to fill.
I have accepted Neera Tanden’s request to withdraw her name from nomination for director of the Office of Management and Budget,” he said. “I have the utmost respect for her record of accomplishment, her experience and her counsel.”
He added: “She will bring valuable perspective and insight to our work.”
Tanden, a top counselor to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, faced criticism from both political parties for her work at a liberal think tank and for her frequent and harsh social media posts criticizing lawmakers of both parties. Biden surprised lawmakers and officials in both parties when he chose her to lead the Office of Management and Budget prior to Democrats taking control of the Senate.
Senators questioned Tanden about her social media posts and her choice to remove over 1,000 Twitter comments prior to her appearance on Capitol Hill during her confirmation hearings. She expressed regret for the hate she had received online, but it was obvious that some senators would not be so easily dismissed.
