Blockade of Dhaka-Tangail Highway by Garment Workers in Gazipur
Even on a Wednesday, the state of the textile factories in the metropolis of Gazipur is abnormal. The authorities in the Gazipur Sadar district have declared 12 factory holidays in an effort to get the situation under control.
Today at ten a.m., Niagara Group employees protested outside the plant, calling for the release of August arrears and the reopening of the shuttered facility. They once spent two hours blocking the Dhaka-Tangail highway.
Concurrently, garment laborers in the Chandra region of Kalikakair Thana, Gazipur, stopped the route, requesting the opening of factories and the payment of outstanding wages. Eventually, the army and police arrived and persuaded them to abandon the highway at midday.
Under the condition of anonymity, the employees stated, “The factory has closed without paying the August salary.” By visiting the location and interacting with the workers, the industrial police are attempting to normalize the situation.
