Brand-name clothing retailers in BD are unable to draw customers for their Eid sales.

There are tons of customers in Dhaka’s bustling New Market who are trying to get the ideal costume for Eid-ul-Fitr. Pre-holiday shopping frenzy has the market buzzing with vibrant textiles and festive accessories.

During a visit to Bashundhara City Shopping Mall in Panthapath yesterday, this correspondent noticed huge lines of customers at YELLOW, Gentle Park, Aarong, Twelve Clothing and Mbrella. However, there were a few customers in general shops.

Yesterday, a large crowd of customers was observed at the Nobin Fashion Panjabi store in Moghbazar. Panjabi was being sold between Tk 500–1500 for each.

Despite the large number of shoppers on the day, the saree seller at Dhaka New Super Market told TBS that sales were not very high. In comparison to previous year, he claimed, their sales in the Eid market had dropped by thirty percent. We had to purchase clothing from wholesale at a 15% higher cost, yet consumers are haggling based on the price from the previous year. We are unable to profitably from the transaction as a result.

Dealers claim that Pahela Baishakh and Eid are the two major holidays that account for a significant 75% of the Tk30,000 crore local fashion market’s overall sales.

They claimed that due to rising living costs, a large number of consumers had reduced their spending on garments, shoes and other products during Eid.
