British MPs Withdraw Report Criticizing Yunus Government
A report that criticized the interim government on behalf of ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been withdrawn by several British MPs. According to The Guardian, the report was issued last November by the UK’s All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Commonwealth Affairs. It sharply criticized the interim government, although accusations have arisen that many of the details in the report were inaccurate.
Officials confirmed that the report will no longer be circulated after a Labour Party MP raised a complaint in the House of Commons, and it is now under “review.”
The contentious report included several critiques of Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, who played a key role in the formation of the interim government following Hasina’s ousting. In a press release, Andrew Rosindell, the Conservative Chair of the APPG, stated, “Bangladesh should have a prosperous future, with opportunities available not just for those in power but for everyone. If this trend doesn’t change immediately, the hopes of the international community for the new government could easily dissipate.”
The report also accused Dr. Yunus’s government of using the law as a political tool and supporting “radical Islamists.” Experts have condemned the report for containing false information and showing bias in favor of the ousted Hasina government. Recently, Labour Party MP Rupa Huq, who had just returned from Bangladesh, strongly criticized the report in the House of Commons, labeling it as a “conspiratorial act” against the interim government of Bangladesh.
