Brits to discover who will be successful Boris Johnson as their nation prepares for impending chaos
As the nation prepares for an impending humanitarian and economic crisis, Britons will learn later on Monday who will succeed Boris Johnson as prime minister. Johnson resigned from office over two months ago amid a string of scandals.
The results of the Conservative Party’s leadership contest, in which Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak fiercely lambasted each other’s ideas, will be announced at around 12:30 p.m. local time (7:30 a.m. ET) by the ruling party.
As the face of the British Conservative right and a proponent of low taxes, Truss is the clear favorite to defeat Sunak, the former chancellor of the exchequer, who supported Brexit but is now more moderate in his views on how the UK should handle the EU.
The victor of the competition will become prime minister until the next general election, which must happen by December 2024, as the head of the largest party in the House of Commons.
Whoever wins will probably make the trip to see Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday in order to get an invitation to establish a government. The 96-year-old monarch is visiting her Scottish home in Balmoral and will greet Johnson and his successor there for the first time in her reign. Normally, the reception is held at Buckingham Palace.
