Canada’s New Prime Minister Mark Carney
Mark Carney has been elected as the new Prime Minister of Canada, marking the end of nearly a decade under Justin Trudeau’s leadership. Carney was chosen as the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada on Sunday, March 9, and, as per party rules, he will now officially assume the role of Prime Minister.
Carney takes office during a crucial time, as Canada is embroiled in a trade dispute with the United States. Following his election, Carney addressed the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. He referred to the 25% tariff on Canadian goods as “the biggest crisis of our lives” and expressed that Canada did not seek this trade conflict. “But Canadians are always ready when challenged. So, to the U.S., don’t make a mistake—just like in hockey, Canada will win in this trade fight too.”
Mark Carney’s election comes amid heightened tensions between Canada and the U.S., particularly after President Trump referred to Canada as the 51st state and mockingly called Trudeau “Governor Trudeau.” In response, Carney rejected Trump’s claims, saying, “America is not Canada, and Canada will never, in any way, be a part of America.”
Carney is expected to formally take the oath of office before Canada’s Governor General in the coming days. The Governor General represents King Charles III of the United Kingdom in Canada. Additionally, Carney may call for a general election by the end of April.
This change in leadership follows Justin Trudeau’s resignation on January 6, 2025, from both the Prime Minister’s position and as leader of the Liberal Party. Trudeau, who first became Prime Minister in 2015, stepped down after facing a decline in popularity.
