China is Building the World’s Largest Airport on an Artificial Island
China is constructing what is set to become the world’s largest airport on an artificial island off of the country’s coast. The ambitious project, known as the Hong Kong International Airport Third Runway, is being developed to handle the growing demand for air travel and increase the capacity of the already bustling Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).
The new airport will span approximately 12.5 square kilometers and is expected to accommodate an annual capacity of up to 100 million passengers, making it the largest in passenger throughput. The artificial island is being built on reclaimed land in the South China Sea, just north of the existing Hong Kong International Airport.
The airport will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including multiple runways, terminals, and a vast transportation hub connecting air, sea, and rail services. The project, which is part of China’s broader plan to modernize its infrastructure and bolster its position as a global transportation hub, is expected to create thousands of jobs and stimulate the region’s economy.
Construction of the airport is expected to be completed by the late 2020s, with phased operations starting earlier. Upon completion, it is projected to significantly alleviate congestion at HKIA and contribute to China’s increasing influence in global aviation.
Experts predict that the new airport will not only serve as a major international transit point but also play a crucial role in facilitating economic and trade exchanges between China and the rest of the world.
