Continuous rain has left Dhaka’s streets submerged

Heavy rain and thunderstorms that began early in the morning and continued for several hours caused widespread waterlogging across various parts of the capital. As roads became submerged, commuters faced severe difficulties navigating the city, with long traffic jams and delays adding to their frustration. The persistent downpour not only disrupted daily routines but also exposed the city’s poor drainage infrastructure, leaving many areas struggling to cope with the accumulated water.

Heavy rain started around 5:45am and since then, light to moderate rainfall has continued. Around 7:30am, water flooded various roads in areas such as Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Kalabagan, Karwan Bazar, Green Road, Monipuripara, New Market, Asadgate, Jigtala, Khilkhet, causing heavy traffic congestions. In some places, the water level was knee deep, while in the streets of Fakirapool, Kakrail, Malibagh, Rajarbag, and Motijheel, was waist-deep in water.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department recorded 34mm of rainfall in the capital between midnight and 6:00am today. A low-pressure system is likely to form over the North Bay of Bengal, and although not officially announced yet, meteorologist Md Shahinul Islam says its effects are already being felt.

Due to active Monsoon, heavy (44-88mm/24hrs) to very heavy (88mm/24hrs) rainfall is likely to occur at places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions,” said a Met office bulletin.
