Death Toll from Powerful Earthquake in Afghanistan Rises to Over 250, More Than 500 Injured

A powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late on Sunday (August 31), causing widespread devastation and significant loss of life. According to the country’s Ministry of Information, at least 250 people have been confirmed dead, while more than 500 others have been injured. Officials fear the death toll may rise as rescue operations continue.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake struck at 11:17 PM GMT. The epicenter was located approximately 27 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad, at a shallow depth of just 8 kilometers. The earthquake measured 6.0 on the Richter scale, making it one of the strongest to hit the region in recent years.

The most severely affected areas include several districts in Kunar province, notably Nurgal, Sawki, Watapur, Manogi, and Chapa Dara. Many of these regions are remote, and communication remains difficult, making it challenging to assess the full extent of the damage.

Local residents described the quake as one of the strongest in recent memory, with powerful tremors felt in various parts of the country. The capital city Kabul located nearly 200 kilometers from the epicenter, experienced shaking that lasted several seconds, causing panic among residents. Tremors were also felt as far away as Islamabad, the capital of neighboring Pakistan.

According to the USGS, at least two strong aftershocks were recorded in the region shortly after the main quake, one of which measured 5.2 magnitude. These aftershocks have further complicated the rescue efforts and increased fear among survivors.

Various humanitarian organizations and local volunteers are assisting in rescue and relief efforts. Teams are working around the clock to pull survivors from the rubble, while urgent appeals have been made for food, clean water, medical aid, and temporary shelters.

Authorities are calling for national and international support to help affected communities recover from this devastating disaster.
