Doctor at Mayo Clinic accused of poisoning his wife’s drink after their marriage failed has been charged with first-degree murder.

After a grand jury indicted a Mayo Clinic physician who was suspected of poisoning his wife in August, the doctor’s charges were escalated to first-degree murder on Friday.

In addition to one accusation of second-degree murder, 30-year-old Connor Bowman is now accused with premeditated first-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, Betty Jo Bowman, according to court records submitted in Olmsted County.

Connor Bowman, a former internal medicine doctor and former poison specialist, is facing charges for the death of Betty Jo Bowman. Bowman, who died on August 20 after a brief hospitalization, was accused of having marital issues and planning to divorce her husband over a large amount of debt she claimed he had hidden from her.

Prosecutors also revealed that Betty Jo became suspicious of her husband’s attempts to poison her just 10 days before her death. Court documents show that she disposed of a smoothie she thought contained poison.

Another incident involved an alcoholic drink made by Bowman, which caused her to become violently ill and led to her hospitalization and death. Bowman received $500,000 from an insurance policy on Betty Jo and had searched for colchicine, or liquid colchicine, to purchase through an online pharmacy. An autopsy showed toxic levels of the medication in her body after her death. Bowman remains in custody at the Olmsted County Jail and his next court hearing is scheduled for January 16.
