Fire in Dhaka’s Gazi Tyre factory: Injured, Dead and Missing Persons are Identified
A catastrophic fire erupted at the Gazi Tyre Factory in Dhaka, resulting in significant damage, numerous injuries, and a growing list of missing persons. The blaze, which began around 3 AM local time, quickly engulfed the facility, causing a massive emergency response effort.
According to initial reports, the fire started in the production area of the factory, rapidly spreading due to the highly flammable materials stored on-site. Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours, finally bringing it under control by mid-morning. The extent of the damage has left the factory’s infrastructure heavily compromised.
The factory’s management has reported that many employees were present at the time of the fire, leading to a growing list of missing persons. The investigation committee said 129 people were listed as missing. Last August 25, Gazi Tyres factory suffered a lot of damage due to the fire. After 32 hours of fire there was nothing left but some engines and dangerous structures. Structures charred by fire are likely to collapse at any time. Hence the rescue operation has been stopped since August 30.
The Gazi Tyre Factory, a significant player in Bangladesh’s manufacturing sector, had previously adhered to industry safety standards. The cause of the fire remains unclear, but initial theories include potential electrical faults, arson, or other operational issues.
The incident underscores the critical need for rigorous safety measures and effective response plans to protect workers and prevent such devastating events in the future.
