Fresh water Shortage Due to Floods, Risk of Spreading Water Borne Diseases in Chittagong
Residents of the area are facing severe shortage of clean water as various tubewells and other sources of fresh water in Chittagong’s Fatikchari, Hathazari, Rangunia and Raujan areas have sunk.
As there has been no rain in the last 24 hours, flood waters have started receding in many areas. However, around 260,000 people in Chittagong district are still in water-locked condition, district administration officials said.
The scarcity of clean water not only poses immediate challenges but also heightens the risk of spreading waterborne diseases. Health officials are on high alert, implementing measures to prevent outbreaks and providing emergency aid to affected areas. At present, the district has 111,000 pieces of water purification tablets and 348,000 packets of oral saline in stock.
Efforts are underway to restore water supplies and ensure safe drinking water for all residents. In the meantime, local communities are advised to follow hygiene practices and seek medical attention if symptoms of waterborne diseases arise.
