Google to fire 30,000 more employees? Report suggests AI jobs may lead to restructuring inside company
Google is considering a significant reorganization inside its 30,000-person ad sales team in an effort to better integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its daily operations. But this action has raised worries about possible job losses, especially in light of Google’s recent cutbacks that may impact over 12,000 workers in 2023.
This reorganization is in keeping with Google’s increasing reliance on machine-learning methods to simplify the acquisition of ads across all of its platforms. The tech giant’s annual revenue, which is expected to be in the tens of billions of dollars, has increased dramatically as a result of the introduction over time of AI-powered technologies that automate the generation of new advertisements. High profit margins are the outcome of these tools’ efficiency and low labor participation.
Google is considering staff consolidation and possible layoffs due to AI improvements that could result in job displacement. These actions include reassigning people in the customer sales unit who are in charge of maintaining relationships with key advertisers. It is stated that during a department-wide Google Ads meeting, the plan to automate specific tasks was revealed.
Google announced a “new era of AI-powered ads” in May, bringing with it a conversational experience in natural language within Google Ads. This program attempts to make ad campaign production easier by utilizing AI to analyze webpages and automatically generate keywords, headlines, descriptions, images, and other materials.
One notable AI-powered advertising tool, Performance Max (PMax), saw improvements after May, demonstrating the ability of generative AI to effectively build and scale unique assets. Using website scans, PMax generates ad content on its own and helps marketers choose the best places for their ads across different Google Ads channels. Through continuous real-time ad remixing, this dynamic AI-driven strategy optimizes performance by adjusting to click-through rates.
There is a discernible decline in the necessity for human involvement in ad design and sales as AI solutions like PMax become more and more popular among advertisers. AI technologies are more profitable since they are low-maintenance and don’t require much user attention from employees.
A large number of employees in the advertising business are projected to be impacted by the planned restructure. As of a year ago, the data indicated that there were around 13,500 people working in the sales industry. While the scope of the impact is unknown, various position reassignments inside Google are being considered. Employees should prepare for possible changes in roles and responsibilities during this transformative phase as official announcements regarding the scope and details of the reorganization are expected to be made in the upcoming month.
