How will the 2024 Pakistani election be conducted?

A new administration to steer the crisis-ridden South Asian country for the next five years will be formed on Thursday when Pakistani voters go to the polls in a nationally broadcast major election.

Pakistan is a parliamentary democracy and voters will elect members to the federal legislature known as the National Assembly as well as four provincial or state legislatures.

All Pakistanis over the age of 18 are eligible to vote, accounting for 128 million of the country’s 241 million population. Polling booths are typically open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. However this might be extended in extraordinary situations.

Voters will select two lawmakers to represent their constituency on election day one at the federal level and one at the provincial level. There are 12,695 candidates running for the provinces and 5,121 for the federal assembly.

Selected candidates join the National Assembly as members. Independent candidates have the option of joining any party following the elections.

The prime minister is chosen by the National Assembly by a legislative vote when it is created.

A successful candidate has to garner the support of at least 169 members of the house, or a simple majority.

A prime ministerial candidate is sworn in as prime minister after winning a majority vote in the National Assembly. The federal government is made up of cabinet ministers chosen by the newly appointed prime minister. Provincial governments and chief ministers are chosen using a comparable procedure.
