ICJ President Nawaf Salam Elected as Lebanon’s New Prime Minister

Nawaf Salam, the President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), has been appointed as Lebanon’s new Prime Minister. The announcement was made by President Michel Aoun announced this Monday, January 13. This decision follows a vote by Lebanon’s Parliament, where 84 out of 128 lawmakers expressed their support for Salam.
Salam’s election marks a significant shift in Lebanon’s political landscape, as it comes at a time of ongoing political and economic crises. The appointment, however, is seen as a major setback for Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Shiite militant group, which has expressed concerns that Salam may prioritize the interests of Lebanon’s opposition parties.
The nomination process was influenced by strong pressure from Saudi Arabia, which had called for swift action following the election of President Aoun last Thursday. With the country facing deep political divisions and instability, experts believe Salam’s appointment may signal the beginning of a new chapter in Lebanese politics, though it could also lead to further complications in the already fragile political environment.
Salam, who is currently abroad, is expected to return to Lebanon on Tuesday. His election is seen as a pivotal moment in the country’s efforts to form a stable government, with many hoping that his international experience and reputation for impartiality will help navigate Lebanon through its ongoing challenges.
