Kaptai Dam Releases 16 Gates
Chittagong, Bangladesh (25 August 2024) – Authorities have announced the release of 16 gates at the Kaptai Dam in response to rising water levels due to heavy rainfall in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The decision to open the gates is aimed at mitigating potential flooding downstream.
Residents living along the Karnaphuli River are advised to remain vigilant and be prepared for possible inundation. The sluices of Kaptai Dam were supposed to be opened at 10 pm yesterday, Saturday. However, the gates were opened on Sunday morning after withdrawing from that decision.
Karnaphuli hydro power plant officials said that they went to open the gate at the predetermined time. They decided to open the gates at 8 am as the flow of water there was low and to avoid any night situation.
According to the previous decision, 16 gates have been opened by six inches. However, the gator opening of the spillway will be gradually increased if the water level rises abnormally.
