Landslide Victory for Islami Chhatra Shibir in DUCSU Elections

In a historic return to mainstream campus politics, the Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed United StudentsAlliance has secured a sweeping victory in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections. After years of absence from the limelight, Shibir-affiliated candidates won 23 out of 28 central positions, including all three top executive posts.

Shibir Dominates VP, GS, and AGS Posts

  • Vice President (VP):
Md. Abu Sadik Kayem clinched the top position with 14,042 votes, defeating his closest rival Abidul Islam Khan of Chhatra Dal, who garnered 5,708 votes.
  • General Secretary (GS):
SM Farhad of Shibir was elected with 10,794 votes, far ahead of runner-up Sheikh Tanvir Bari Hamim (5,283 votes).
  • Assistant General Secretary (AGS):
Muha. Mohiuddin Khan secured the AGS post with 11,772 votes.

9 Out of 12 Secretary Posts Go to Shibir Panel

The Shibir-backed panel also triumphed in 9 of the 12 secretary positions. Victorious candidates include:

  • Liberation War & Democratic Movements Secretary: Fatema Tasnim Juma (10,631 votes)
  • Science & Technology Secretary: Iqbal Haidar (7,833 votes)
  • International Affairs Secretary: Khan Jasim (9,706 votes)
  • Student Transport Secretary: Asif Abdullah (9,061 votes)
  • Sports Secretary: Arman Hossain (7,255 votes)
  • Cafeteria Secretary: Umme Salma (9,920 votes)
  • Human Rights Secretary: Sakhawat Zakaria (11,747 votes)
  • Health & Environment Secretary: MM Al Minhaj (7,038 votes)
  • Career Development Secretary: Mazharul Islam (9,344 votes)

Three other secretary posts were won by independent candidates:

  • Social Welfare Secretary: Jubair Bin Nessari
  • Literature & Cultural Affairs Secretary: Musaddiq Ali Ibn Mohammad
  • Research & Publications Secretary: Sanjida Ahmed Tanvy (11,708 votes)

This dramatic comeback of Islami Chhatra Shibir to DUCSU marks a significant shift in student politics at Dhaka University. After more than 15 years of being sidelined under the Awami League government, Shibir began reorganizing on campus following the July 2024 uprising that led to regime change.

Within just a year of re-emerging in public, their sweeping win in the DUCSU election is being described by political observers as a “game-changer” in student politics and a rebirth of ideological contestation on campus.
