Meta instructed to review the regulatory framework for EU personalized advertisements.

Facebook and Instagram have been penalized 390 million euros ($414 million) by the EU’s primary privacy regulator, Meta, for breaches involving user data.

Meta, the principal EU privacy regulator for Ireland’s Data Privacy Commissioner (DPC), has stated that it needs to reevaluate the legal foundation for how these platforms use user data for targeted advertising.

The rulings do not prohibit personalized advertising on Meta’s platforms and Meta plans to challenge both the opinions’ content and the fines imposed.

Meta believes its strategy complies with EU privacy regulations and does not require consent for data processing. With these penalties, Meta has paid the DPC 1.3 billion euros in fines.
