Prince Edward is given the title of Duke of Edinburgh by King Charles.

Buckingham Palace has announced that Prince Edward will take the throne as the new Duke of Edinburgh.

On the occasion of Prince Edward’s 59th birthday, the King bestowed the title upon his younger brother.

It is a title closely linked to their father, Prince Philip, the 70-year Duke of Edinburgh until his passing in 2021.

The Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie, and the newly appointed Duke paid a visit to the Scottish capital on Friday.

The pair attended an Edinburgh reception honoring volunteers for their year-long assistance of Ukrainian refugees.

The anti-monarchy advocacy group Republic expressed disapproval over Prince Edward’s title award, stating that the “opinions of the people of Edinburgh” ought to have been considered prior to Prince Edward receiving the title as a “birthday present.”

Almost two years after the passing of his father Philip, Prince Edward assumes the title of Duke of Edinburgh. Philip received the title in 1947 when he wed Princess Elizabeth, who went on to become Queen Elizabeth II.

This implies that Edward, the thirteenth heir apparent, will be present at the coronation in May wearing the duke title—a rank that was closely associated with his deceased father.

The King’s younger brother, Prince Edward, may now play a bigger part in the royal family. A bill to include Prince Edward and his sister Princess Anne among the “counsellors of state” authorized to act on the King’s behalf has been approved by Parliament. Having worked in theater and television in the past, Prince Edward has devoted more of his time to public service, notably backing Prince Philip’s Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program. Following his 1999 marriage to Sophie Rhys-Jones, Buckingham Palace said that Prince Edward will one day assume the title of Duke of Edinburgh.

But there is no land or money attached to this title. Since the title of Duke of Edinburgh is not inherited, upon Edward’s passing, it may be awarded to a more senior member of the Royal Family. There will be no title change for Prince Edward’s daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, but his son, Viscount Severn, will now inherit the title of Earl of Wessex. The goal of Buckingham Palace is to carry on Prince Philip’s legacy of encouraging young people from all backgrounds to realize their greatest potential.
