Qatar wins first Olympic gold as Fares Ibrahim sets Olympic record
Qatari weightlifter Fares Ibrahim makes history by earning the country’s first Olympic gold medal in weightlifting.
The Olympic record-setting 402 kg was lifted by Ibrahim, a 23-year-old, who won the gold medal in the 96kg division in the Tokyo Olympics.
Along the route to winning the gold, he also broke the Olympic record in the 225-kg clean and jerk. He snatched up 177 kg.
Ibrahim won the gold medal in the 96-kg weight class at the Qatar International Cup, which allowed him to qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.
