Taylor Swift’s new album has been released.
The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD) recently made its formal debut but the true meaning behind the term remains as elusive as it was when Taylor Swift first introduced it two months ago. In the title track, Swift playfully mocks a troubled poet who carries around a typewriter, drawing comparisons to Patti Smith and Dylan Thomas. Laughing, she admits, “We’re modern idiots.” Swift’s social media posts and liner notes are filled with self-aware literary references and the album’s artwork is steeped in melancholy. Furthermore, a life of cloistered sturdiness is the opposite of the chaotic time period depicted in the lyrics.
TTPD shows a crazy period in Swift’s life last year, revealing the truth behind the Eras tour’s flawless staging. Wild-eyed from what appears to be the creeping breakdown of a six-year relationship, she lunged for a once-forbidden paramour with a taste for disintegration, a nasty language and a well-founded bad reputation. The latter she makes clear as she sings frequently about defying parental and public criticism was a significant element of the attraction “He was chaos, he was revelry,” Swift sings on But Daddy I Love Him obviously about 1975’s Matty Healy.
The contents of TTPD are excitingly immature in their vision. Swift encapsulates the deranged time following a significant breakup, when all rationality has vanished along with your center, friends’ worries are disregarded, lust is at an all-time high and oblivion has never seemed more alluring. She confesses that daydreaming about someone freed her from the stifling grip of a committed relationship.
A few hours following the release of TTPD, the singer also unveiled a covert album, shocking fans even more. “TTPD: The Anthology” is the covert new album that includes 15 bonus tracks.
With four more bonus tracks, the album “TTPD” has 16 tracks total. The Manuscript, The Bolter, The Albatross and The Black Dog are the titles of the extra songs that are featured in each edition of The Tortured Poets Department.
During a stop on her Eras tour in Melbourne, Taylor told fans about her remarkable experience recording her new album. She stated, “The things I was going through the things I was writing about reminded me why music is something that helps me get through my life. I’ve never had an album that required more songwriting than ‘Tortured Poets’.
