Telegram Chief Pavel Durov Arrested at Paris Airport
The chief executive of the popular app Telegram, Pavel Durov, was recently arrested in front of the Le Bourget airport in Paris. Telegram is popular in Russia, Ukraine and the countries of the former Soviet Union.
Pavel Durov founded Telegram in 2013 and has citizenship in several other countries, including the United Arab Emirates and France. Telegram is very popular in Russia, Ukraine, and other Soviet countries. Durov was put under considerable pressure by the Russian government. The app was banned in Russia in 2018 for refusing to hand over user data. However, before it’s ban was lifted in 2021, Durov moved to Dubai in 2014 when the Russian government began applying pressure to collect personal data of Telegram users.
After that, the app is running from there. A report by Russian state news agency TASS said Russian authorities had already learned of Durov’s arrest and were trying to understand the situation. It has been reported that the Russian Embassy in France is taking immediate action regarding the arrest. In terms of popularity, Telegram is second only to Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Tiktok and WeChat, and the number of users is expected to reach 100 million by 2025. And by establishing it, Durov became known as one of the richest people in the world, with a net worth of around 15.5 billion USD.
In an interview given by the United States last April, Durov said that it is more important to do his own thing than to follow someone’s instructions, so he left Russia. The CEO of Telegram, who is also known to be looking for locations in Berlin, London, Singapore and San Francisco for his company Telegram, had to be arrested at a time when this billionaire was arrested.
Police are investigating an allegation of lack of moderators on the Telegram app as they believe the lack of moderators is allowing criminal activity to go unhindered on the messaging app.
