The health risks associated with excessive spiciness
While many people enjoy spicy food, eating too much chili can be harmful to health. Experts warn that excessive consumption of spicy food can lead to several adverse effects, which can be seriously damaging to one’s health. Capsaicin, the compound responsible for the spiciness in chili, can cause digestive issues, stomach ulcers, acidity, and irritation in the intestines when consumed in large amounts. Overeating spicy food can also result in skin allergies, rashes, and red spots.
Professor Dr. Mohammad Rashedul Hasan, from the Medicine Department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, explains, “Excessive intake of spicy food can cause a burning sensation in the mouth and throat, heartburn, and even long-term digestive problems. Those with gastric or peptic ulcers should avoid spicy foods.”
Additionally, consuming too much spice can lead to sleep disturbances, high blood pressure, and an increased risk of heart disease. For children and the elderly, spicy food can present significant health risks.
Nutritionists advise including a moderate amount of spice in the daily diet, based on one’s body tolerance. If any adverse reactions occur, it is essential to seek medical advice promptly.
