The July-August massacre trial begins today

The judicial proceedings of the July-August massacre officially begin today. The tribunal is scheduled to sit at 10:30 am. The tribunal that tried 71 crimes against humanity; It is there that the responsibility of the prosecution of the persecution and killings carried out in suppressing the popular uprising of 24 has fallen. The main accused is former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her associates.

Although the renovation of the main building is nearing completion; For the time being, the tribunal will sit in Tinshed’s courtroom. So far 56 complaints have been submitted to the investigating agency and the prosecution. Which are in the process of charge framing. There is also an opportunity to hire a lawyer from abroad to defend the accused.

The tribunal’s new prosecution team is hopeful of a controversy-free trial at the earliest. But, the amendments that are being talked about on witness protection, victim compensation laws and jurisdiction to punish political parties; It will be understood after the issuance of the Ordinance.

According to jurists, the description of the crime described in Article 26 of the International Criminal Law-1973, Article 3 of Jurisdiction, is similar to the torture of the 2024 coup d’état.
