The sugar factory fire is being put out with 1,000 liters of water sprayed each minute in Chittagong.

Even after 19 hours of work the fire at S Alam Sugar Mill in Chittagong’s Karnaphuli could not be controlled. The fire brigade is currently attempting to control the fire by remote control with 14 units equipped with latest Luff-60 gear. It is filtering water at 1,000 liters per minute yet the fire remains uncontrollable.

However, the flames have not spread beyond the godown since Tuesday (March 5) morning. Attempts are being made to remotely control the fire as of 11:00 p.m.  A fire broke out at S Alam Sugar Mill in Karnaphuli Moizzartek around 4 p.m. on Monday (March 4).

The fire department officials stated that they are attempting to contain the fire using the newest Luff-60 equipment and remote control. There are 12–15 firemen helping with this. That equipment is filtering water at a rate of one thousand liters per minute. Three thousand liters per minute is its maximum capacity.

Assistant Director of Fire Service  Abdul Malek said that the Bangladesh Air Force started working with the fire service to bring the fire under control around 7:30 pm on Monday. Later a team of the Navy also joined. A group of army also joined around 9 pm. They are trying to control the fire with the help of remote control with modern equipment Luff-60.

Subrata Kumar Bhowmik executive director of S Alam Group stated “The fire spread throughout the mill while it was functioning. Attempting to aid the fire department in extinguishing the fire.

He stated, “The godown contained one lakh tons of raw sugar purchased from Brazil. These were brought in before Ramadan. This was where the sugar was meant to be refined before being sold.

S Alam Super Refined Sugar Industries Limited is a corporation situated on the banks of the Karnaphuli river in the Ichanagar district. Around 5:00 p.m., a fire started in one of the factory’s warehouses. The fire started while the factory was in use. There are roughly 500 employees there. The fire forced the closure of the factory.

A seven-person investigative team for the fire event has been created by Additional Divisional Commissioner Sarbik and Acting Divisional Commissioner Anwar Pasha and it will be led by the District Magistrate.

Officials from the corporation claim that four lakh metric tons of raw sugar were imported into this godown from Brazil in advance of Ramzan Month. 100 000 metric tons of stored raw sugar were burned because of this.
