Trump and Biden have agreed to a rematch in the election following their party nominations.
On Tuesday, Democratic primaries were held in four states one American territory and among Democrats residing abroad.
As a result, US voters will face a repeat of the 2020 presidential election in eight months’ time. The nominations will be confirmed at party conventions this summer.
The 81-year-old president declared on Tuesday night that he was honored that people supported his campaign for re-election at a time when the danger posed by Trump is greater than ever.
Citing good economic trends he claimed the United States was “in the midst of a comeback” but it faced challenges to its future as a democracy as well as from those attempting to impose abortion restrictions and eliminate social programs.
In a statement released by his team Mr. Biden stated “I think the American people will choose to keep us moving forward.”
Mr. Biden had an inherent advantage as the incumbent and had no real competition for the Democratic nomination.
The party apparatus came together in support of him despite people ongoing worries that his advanced age prevents him from carrying out the responsibilities of the presidency.
In the meantime, Mr. Trump who is 77 years old continues to have enormous support from the Republican base which has helped him defeat well-funded opponents in primary after primary.
The outcomes of Tuesday night’s event are not surprising given that both men have dominated their respective races thus far.
Both of their re-nominations appeared almost certain, despite polling showing that Americans are uncomfortable with the possibility of another battle between Biden and Trump in November.
The US presidential primaries and caucuses are a state-by-state race to win the most party delegates.
The Democrats and Republicans use somewhat different procedures for their primaries but the process is largely the same.
Each state is assigned a set number of party delegates which are distributed either as a whole to the winning candidate or proportionally depending on the results.
In the meanwhile, Democratic primaries were held in the Northern Mariana Islands, Washington DC, Georgia and for Democrats residing overseas.
Since both Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump’s primary opponents withdrew prior to Tuesday’s primary elections the outcome was all but guaranteed.
Nikki Haley, the former UN ambassador and Mr. Trump’s lone opponent resigned earlier this month after Mr. Trump defeated him in 14 states on Super Tuesday.
Though several more states have still to hold their primary elections, with Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden exceeding the delegate barrier and the 2024 general election is effectively underway. The US presidential election will be held on November 5, 2024.
