Warning Issued on Japanese Beaches: Many Swimmers are Bitten by Dolphins

Dolphins attack sharks on beaches in coastal areas in central Japan. The prefecture’s Mihama city beach has been attacked 18 times this year.
6 people were reportedly injured by dolphin bites in 2023 near Mihama, and one suffered a broken arm. Local authorities have warned to avoid contact with dolphins. In most cases, affected swimmers were not seriously injured.

Dolphins are generally calm but their sharp teeth can cause bloody bites to anyone dragged into the water, and in worst-case scenarios, life may be in doubt.

Singapore National University aquatic mammal expert. Mathias Hoffmann-Kunt said the Dolphin may be trying to defend itself. He added, ‘Like elephants, dolphins have a very good memory. If someone mistreats them, they remember it and act accordingly.’
