West Indies to Celebrate Golden Jubilee of World Cup Victory
Once a dominant force in cricket, the West Indies ruled the game for a long time. The Caribbean team won the first two ODI World Cups almost unchallenged. However, since then, they haven’t been able to lift the World Cup again. The first World Cup trophy was won by Clive Lloyd’s team in 1975.
On June 21, 1975, the entire West Indies celebrated their World Cup victory at Lord’s Cricket Ground. This year marks the 50th anniversary of that historic triumph, which will be celebrated on June 21, 2025. West Indies cricket is planning a grand celebration for the golden jubilee, as reported by cricket-based website Cricbuzz on April 2.
The iconic image of legendary captain Clive Lloyd lifting the Prudential Cup trophy remains a vivid memory in the cricketing world. West Indies stunned everyone by defeating Australia in the final. Lloyd led from the front with a match-winning century, guiding his team to a 17-run victory and immortalizing West Indies in the pages of history.
Ahead of the golden jubilee, Cricket West Indies’ CEO, Chris Dehring, said, “We certainly want to celebrate this moment. Everyone will be informed about the details in due time. I am not sharing specifics right now.”
It is expected that the celebrations will take place on June 25, with a Test match against Australia at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.
