WHO: Mpox is Controllable, Not an Epidemic Like Covid-19
Mpox is spreading widely in Central Africa. Then last week the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency around the world. However, the agency confirmed, there are ways to control Mpox and it will not turn into an epidemic like Covid.
In a press briefing today, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s Technical Lead on Health Emergencies, stated that global and local health measures have been effective in curbing the spread of Mpox. “Through coordinated efforts, timely interventions, and effective vaccination campaigns, we have managed to bring the outbreak under control”, Dr. Van Kerkhove said. “While the disease remains a public health concern, it does not pose the same level of threat as COVID-19 did”.
Mpox has increased in West Africa and Central Africa. Infection is spread from imported animals and through travel to affected areas.
As of 2022, MPOX has spread to 74 countries around the world. This year there is a terrible outbreak of mpox in the Congo and its neighboring countries and many people are dying from the disease.
