2020’s MMFF features student short films.

Promising student filmmakers from across the nation submit short tales for the annual Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2020.

The 2020 Summer MMFF Student Short Film Competition was originally scheduled to include several entries, but the coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic forced a postponement. The tilt has been transferred to become a yearly fixture of the MMFF Christmas, along with other events.

The event is being streamed live this year via the Filipino platform Upstream.

The individuals AaBaKaDa, Sala, Salin-Laway, Sina Alexa, Xander at Ang Universe, and Paano Maging Babae are sophomores in the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde School of Design and Arts majoring in Digital Filmmaking (DFilm).

Tyrone James Luanzon’s AaBaKaDa examines the potential effects of the country’s growing immigrant population. Daniella Verzosa’s humorous Sala, Salin-Laway takes visitors into a Filipino home where Miss Universe mania joins the entire community in one living room, not just the family.

While Vahn Leinard Pascual’s Sina Alexa, Xander, at ang Universe reminds viewers to appreciate life’s small pleasures through a sibling pageant, Gian Arre’s Paano Maging Babae aims to address the title question as one woman chooses to speak out against societal injustices caused by misogyny.

The lineup includes Lipstick and Paraisong Parisukat from the Philippine High School for Art, Kyokok (Nilingaw) from the Western Mindanao State University, and Balik-Bayan from the University of Makati.

Laruang Baril from the Far Eastern University and Garbo from the University of Southeastern Philippines complete the selections.

The movies address the nation’s current social and political issues while also showcasing Filipino culture and tradition in every home.

The student shorts can be watched globally today along with this year’s feature-length films on the Upstream PH video-on-demand platform by clicking this link: https://upstream.ph/mmff/.
