Lionel Messi has won the men’s Ballon d’Or award for a record seventh time at a ceremony in Paris.

Messi won the last edition in 2019 before the pandemic, and has won in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2015.

Last season, he scored 38 goals in 48 games for Barcelona and won the Copa del Rey before captaining Argentina to Copa America glory. Messi has now won the Ballon d’Or twice more than his old rival Cristiano Ronaldo, with them winning 12 of the last 13 editions.

Robert Lewandowski finished second, and Jorginho was third in the voting by a jury of journalists from around the world.
