Trial of Charlie Hebdo suspended as suspect contracted COVID-19

According to attorneys, the primary suspect in the 2015 Charlie Hebdo assault in France has tested positive for Covid-19, and as a result, his trial has been put on hold.

Ali Reza Plat is charged with providing support to the Islamist militants who attacked the satirical magazine four years ago, killing twelve people.

Before the trial can continue, the presiding judge orders that ten of the accused accomplices be tested for the virus.

The trial’s completion later this month is probably going to be delayed by the suspension.

After Ali Reza Plat, 35, visited a doctor due to illness, the judge decided to postpone proceedings for a few days.

Ten more suspects need to be tested, according to Judge Regis de Joana, and “the resumption of the trial will depend on the results of these tests and the development of the people condemned’s health.”

In the upcoming days, the defense attorneys were scheduled to present their last arguments, and judgments were anticipated.  Ali Reza Plat is charged with providing support to the Islamist militants who attacked the satirical magazine four years ago, killing twelve people.

For their roles in the attack on the magazine, a police officer, and a Jewish store, which resulted in 17 fatalities over three days, a total of 14 persons are on trial. Out of the 14, three are undergoing an absentee trial.

 Police killed the three gunmen who had carried out the two attacks. As the primary link connecting the attacks, Ali Reza Plat is thought to have played a significant part in acquiring the weaponry. After that, he made unsuccessful attempts to escape to Dubai, Lebanon, and Syria.

The corona virus pandemic had already caused a four-month delay in the experiment.
